Indonesia VoA vs eVisa: which one actually applies to you?
Use the passport you will hand over — not the villa name on the booking. Visa on Arrival (VoA / e-VoA) and the online visit visa / eVisa are separate products. Pick the wrong one and you either overpay or get stopped at check-in.
VoA is a permission type, not a Bali ticket
On the VoA list, you can usually take a 30-day Visa on Arrival at designated airports and seaports, or finish e-VoA online before departure. One inland extension (+30 days) is commonly available if you apply at immigration before the first grant runs out.
That stamp works the same at DPS (Bali) and CGK (Jakarta). “Going to Bali” does not invent a second visa category.
When the eVisa / visit visa is the honest answer
Passports off both the VoA list and the visa-exemption list need approval before travel. That is the online visit visa / eVisa path — not a last-minute counter buy. Turnaround is often hours to a couple of working days; it is not a same-morning airport rescue plan.

Counter purchase vs applying before you fly
VoA-eligible travellers still choose: pay at the desk after a long-haul, or submit e-VoA so the carrier already sees an approval. After overnight flights from Europe, the Gulf, or Australia, online is simply less miserable than a cash queue on no sleep.
Fees and eligible ports move. Re-check the official immigration portals before you lock non-refundable tickets.

FAQs
Can two people on the same booking need different Indonesia visas?
Yes. Immigration reads passports, not shared hotel confirmations. A US citizen and a Nepalese citizen flying together can clear on different products — VoA for one, a pre-approved eVisa for the other. Check each nationality before anyone pays.
I’m VoA-eligible. Do I still need the $70 or $130 tourist eVisa?
Usually no. VoA / e-VoA is already a 30-day path (often extendable once). The $70 / $130 tourist eVisa SKUs are for passports that are not on the VoA list — or for stays that product actually covers. If your country page says VoA, start there; don’t buy a tourist eVisa just because a checkout page shows those prices.
If I land in Jakarta instead of Bali, does my category change?
No. Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) and Ngurah Rai (DPS) both handle national entry rules. Queues and airline document checks differ by flight; the visa category attached to your passport does not flip because you changed airports.
I applied for e-VoA online — do I still join the VoA payment queue?
You should use the e-approval / e-VoA lane your airline and airport signage point to, not the cash VoA counter meant for people buying on the spot. Bring the PDF offline. If your approval is missing or rejected, you are back to whatever fallback your nationality allows — which may be none at the desk.
